Seventh and eighth grade students at Nativity of Mary School, toured several historic churches to study architecture last week.
Students began their tour in Lackawanna at Our Lady of Victory Basilica. They learned about the Baroque, heavily decorated style, while viewing marble statues, painted domes, stained glass windows and the Bascilia’s other ornate decorations. They also viewed Fr. Baker’s tomb and the toured the Father Baker museum.
The next stop on the tour was Corpus Christi, a Polish Baroque style church on Clark Street, Buffalo. The 7th & 8th grade classes donated several baskets of new children’s clothing and coats to Corpus Christi’s Clothes Closet. Here they attended mass in the Chapel and were treated to a very generous lunch donated by the parish community.
Not far from Corpus Christi, the students visited St. Ann’s, a German Gothic style church on Broadway. This church, with pointed arches and sculptures carved in wood not marble and painted is different from the Baroque style of the Basilica and Corpus Christi. The docent was very informative and removed some wooden reliefs from the alter, demonstrating that nothing was nailed or glued, showing the true craftsmanship of German woodworkers.
The last stop on the architectural tour was St. Paul’s Episcopal Cathedral in the Gothic Revival style. Students learned about the Episcopal Mass, the choir, structure of the building including the floor plan, vaulted ceiling, buttresses, pillars, and the stained glass windows, including the historic Tiffany window.
